Project Overview
The Concept
Hourglass is an interactive installation that maps the architectural and cultural heritage of the Trucial States (now UAE) before 1971. It combines physical mapping, augmented reality, and oral histories to create an immersive experience that connects past and present.
Cultural Significance
By documenting and visualizing pre-1971 architectural styles, tribal territories, and cultural practices, Hourglass preserves vital aspects of Emirati heritage that are rapidly disappearing from physical and collective memory in the face of rapid modernization.
Technologies Used
- 3D Modeling: Shapr3D, Blender, Rhino8
- Augmented Reality: STYLY, Adobe Aero
- Physical Components: LED circuits, wooden map, 3D printed models
Research Approach
Our approach combined archival research, oral history, and digital mapping techniques to create a comprehensive picture of the Trucial States before 1971. We focused on documenting architectural styles, cultural practices, and geographical features that have been transformed by rapid modernization.
Making of Hourglass
Initial Research
The foundation of Hourglass was built through extensive research into the Trucial States era (the period before the UAE's unification in 1971). We gathered information from academic texts, maps, photographs, and oral histories shared by family members and elders. This process helped us uncover the unique identities, lifestyles, and architectural features of each emirate. The goal was to ensure that every element of the project, whether visual or narrative, was grounded in cultural and historical accuracy.
